GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Rainbow Center (RC) was established in 1997 with the goal of providing a safe resource referral and gathering space for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and allied community. That mission is just as pertinent now as it was then. In the community we provide education resources, act as advocates and work to celebrate our unique histories. 

As a community center, the RC provides outreach and education on LGBTQ cultural competency, advocacy services for victims of crimes, and volunteer opportunities. We also provide meeting space for several community partners and host the annual Tacoma Pride Festival.

Over 100 people from all different backgrounds make use of the RC on a weekly basis, with visitors predominantly from Pierce, King, Kitsap, and Thurston counties. Please look online for more information www.rainbowcntr.org.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Education Manager provides direct educational services to community members who have a desire to be educated about how to be a better ally to the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, the Education Manager provides oversight to contractors and, when properly resourced, education and education support staff. The Education Manager creates the curriculum to be used for educational purposes, and keeps that curriculum protected, given that the intellectual property belongs to Rainbow Center. Work (trainings and all other activities) may be in-person or virtual, depending on the needs of the organization being trained. Also there is flexibility in in-office and remote work based on the needs of the Manager and the needs of the organization.

The Education Manager is responsible for the following:

  • Providing direct educational trainings to groups of individuals.
  • Marketing the program to employers and community groups.
  • Development of curriculum for RC’s general trainings and youth education programming.
  • Develop webinars to be licensed to organizations for their use for limited timeframes.
  • Supervises contract Teaching Artists and any staff assigned to the Education Department.
  • Represents RC in stakeholder groups -- especially when groups define themselves as education, culture, or arts.
  • Attend weekly team and staff meetings.
  • Responds to inquiries, phone calls, and e-mail in a timely and responsive manner.
  • Provides general assistance to larger scale RC programs, such as PRIDE and the Gayla.
  • Agrees to be the “Manager of the Day” one afternoon per week to assist the advocacy program with space management community members who may need additional support during community hours.
  • Is part of the RC Management Team and can be called upon to represent the organization from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Theater, or related field.
  • Ability to develop educational curriculum- specific to LGBTQ+ awareness.
  • Demonstrated experience with providing educational services to the public, as well as ability, and desire to work competently with the LGBTQ community of varying socioeconomic classes, identities, and racial/ethnic backgrounds.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a team member, and work independently with limited supervision.
  • Able to pass a Washington State Patrol background check.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products such as Word and Excel. Previous experience with Google products (Gmail, Google docs, etc.) a plus.
  • Working knowledge of and/or experience with the transgender/gender non-conforming community and individuals.
  • A strong commitment to an anti-racist framework.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Persons who are bilingual and multicultural, identifying with the LGBTQ, Latinx, or African American community.
  • Working knowledge of one of the six most commonly used languages in Pierce County (Spanish, Korean, Tagalog, Vietnamese, German, or Russian).

HOURS OF WORK & PAY RATE

Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Some evening and weekend hours, and sometime more than 40 hours per week, depending on demand. This is an exempt position. This is a full-time position with full benefits. Pay range is $25-$30/hour DOQ, plus a great benefits package.
